Day of Service 2020

Day of Service
Held in conjunction with the 1st Pastoral Anniversary of Rev. Peter R. Blue Sr.
September 19-20, 2020

Looking Back While Reaching Forward: The Courage of Faithful Leadership (Proverbs 4:25-26)

Our Pastor is passionate about supporting both our church family and the local community, so plans are underway for our second annual Day of Service to take place as a pre-anniversary event on September 19th, just prior to our 1st Anniversary Celebration on September 20th.  Our efforts will span beyond this one day with additional activities taking place on the evening of September 18th and on September 23rd.  See below for more informatin.  Supporting the community and those in need is always important, but even moreso in the age of COVID=19.

Several volunteer opportunities are available for those wishing to help us with these worthy causes:

Sign up to Donate Blood on Wednesday, September 23rd

Everyone needed!

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Chances are you know someone whose life may have been saved as a result of a blood donor. But the reality is that there aren’t enough people donating blood to help patients in need.

In partnership with the American Red Cross, we urge healthy donors to make an appointment to give blood to support kids fighting cancer, patients with sickle cell disease and others facing serious illnesses.

Appointment will be appropriately spaced to ensure adequate social distancing, and the Red Cross is taking all precautions as outined by the CDC when taking blood.

Volunteers with the gift to uplift and encourage needed!
We are also partnering with Promise Place,  an emergency youth shelter in District Heights that provides homeless, abandoned, abused, neglected and runaway youth a compassionate alternative to the dangers of the streets and/or unstable housing.  In speaking with the counselors at Promise Place they emphasized the following:  "We need notes and messages that include anything that lets our youth know that they are not forgotten; that they are seen and valued and thought of and remembered."  These youth are experiencing signficant challenges, and your note of encouragement could be just what they need to keep the faith.  CLICK HERE to volunteer.

In addition to the above, St. Matthews will be supporting the following additional organizations as part of our Day of Service.

  • Shepherd's Cove - Homeless Shelter for Women & Children

  • First Responder Appreciation - Gift Basket to Local Firehouse and Local Post Office.

And because mental health is such an important issue, especially in these trying times, we will be hosting a Mental Health Awareness Webinar and encourage all of our St. Matthews family to sign up. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER BY 12:00 Noon on Friday, September 18.
